A collectible can be any item or set of items in which a person takes interest or places value upon.  Collectibles normally possess a certain rarity or uniqueness that separates them from common items.  Alternatively, common items such as dinnerware or picture frames can become collectible items to certain individuals that value them. Collectibles differ from antiques in that they are usually less than 100 years old due to classifications. The terms may overlap but are not completely exchangeable.

Many people begin collecting as an enjoyable hobby , which is not only satisfying but always provides a lot of fun.  Some people collect mainly for their love of the collectible while some are deeply and genuinely interested in it, sometimes for scholarly purposes. However, many of the hobbyists look at collecting as a profession that can become a successful and rewarding business for entrepreneurs . They look to the hobby as an investment as there is a growing trend among people to invest in collectibles.  Many collectors flaunt their repository of items and take a lot of pride in their hobby.

A collector usually starts off by simply obtaining collectibles that have a personal connection to them.  For example, the collector might collect toys from childhood, vintage kitchen accessories, or the classic boy hobby, baseball cards.  This interest may gradually develop into a hobby.  A person may also develop a hobby for collecting when he/she begins collecting coins, cards, marbles, or stamps for fun.  Gradually, the area of interest of a collector expands and on to collecting rare books, Longaberger baskets, state quarters, or atomic clocks.  Later, when the collection grows to a nominal size, the collector may think about using this hobby to gain some earnings.  They may view it as an investment option.  However, a collector may also use it to amplify his or her social life.  They may even want to share their information with people having similar interest as an expert.

After a collector collects different things for some consecutive years, he/she may decide to stop collecting or even restart the collection process with an entirely different type of item.  Some collectors may make their collection specialized and start collecting things belonging to specific manufacturers or artists of a certain period in history.  Some may even turn to collecting natural or biological objects like birds’ eggs, butterflies, rocks, and seashells.

The hunt and passion for collecting fuels the collectible industry and makes it a simultaneously challenging and exciting endeavor.  Collectibles is a hobby that can be nurtured with enthusiasm, inquisitive nature, perception and intelligence.  Collecting is an immersing, exciting, and fulfilling hobby that can also become a full-time job for those interested in making a living from it.
